Richard Arbuckle

Richard was born in Berea Ohio on August 16, 1947 and stayed on the East Coast until he enlisted in the Air Force in 1967.  After the Air Force, where he worked as an air traffic controller, he moved to California where he obtained a job as an ambulance driver for AAA Ambulance Co.  In 1972 he met his future wife, Ginnie, who also worked at AAA Ambulance, as the secretary to the Manager.  On October 6, 1973, they were married.

A few years later, Richard and Ginnie purchased AAA, which they operated until it's sale in 1987.  During that period, they also owned and operated several other company's - a limousine service, balloon bouquet delivery company and a children's clothing store among them.  In 1995, he sold the last of these and accepted a management position at San Jose International Airport, where he remains to this day.

Richard has one daughter, Debbie, who is married lives in Las Vegas, with her husband, Gareth and daughters Kaitlyn (Katie) who was born on July 18, 2005 and Sarah who was born on July 23, 2008.

He loves photography and is never far away from his camera, lest he miss a great photo opportunity.  He is the official photographer for the Cupertino Kiwanis Club.

He has been a member of the club for over 25 years, recruited by former member (and his boss) Ray Bell.  During that time Richard has served as Secretary, Vice President and President.  He has been the club Treasurer since 1982.  He was named "Kiwaiian of the Year in 1985 and again for 2001.

Richard has been very active in the community.  Some of his activities have included serving on the American Heart Associations Board of Directors, working with the American Red Cross, serving as the City of Cupertino's Public Safety Commissioner, being a member of the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce and serving on their Board of Directors, and serving as President of the Santa Clara County Ambulance Association. Additionally, Richard was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve on the Santa Clara County Emergency Medical Care Committee and Mass Casualty Commission.  In October 2001, he became a volunteer with the Santa Clara County Sheriffs Department.

Richard says he is most proud of being selected as the first recipient of the City of Cupertino's "City Award."

He lists his favorite things as his wife, Ginnie, photography, travel and seeing new things. 

He thinks the one thing that will most surprise club members is that he was a U.S. mail carrier.....for 3 whole days.  And, that he was "Spoon-Diving Champion" of Norweigan Cruise Lines "Nordic Prince" in 1985.



Art Brookman

Art was born on September 9, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan. He had 3 younger siblings, all sisters.  He felt very strongly about education and was the first in his family to graduate from high school.  He went on to attend Michigan College of Mining & Technology, where he graduated in 1955.  He later obtained a BS from San Jose State University.

Art married Myrna Miller in 1980.  He has 3 children from his first marriage and 4 grandchildren.

From 1955-1962 he worked as an electronic engineer at the US Naval Ordnance Test Station in China Lake, California.  In 1962, he went to work for Locheed Missle & Space in Sunnyvale, where he remained until his retirement in 1996.

Art joined Kiwanis in March 1996 because he wanted to help his community.

His hobbies include golf, skiing, skating, geneology and the computer. He is a big Sharks fan, but his first allegiance is to the Red Wings.

Art ran the Boston Marathon in 1979.  He is proud to boast that he also ran the 1980 National Marathon (26 miles) in under 3 hours.




Dale Burklund

Dale Burklund was born in Colville, WA on October 23, 1923. He remained in Washington state with his parents and sister until moving to the state of Oregon to attend college.  He graduated with a Ed.D degree from Lewis & Clark University in Portland, Oregon in 1959, after which he began a life-long career in education.  He has been married to his wife, Maggie since 1946; they have 2 children. 

Dale has received many academic awards, including the Modell Award, for his work in counseling, the HB McDaniel Individual Award, and he is a McDaniel Hall of Fame inductee.  He is quite proud of the fact that he developed a comprehensive career-counseling program in Parkrose, Oregon.

Dale has been a member of Kiwanis since 1968.

His favorite things are his family, sports, and most desserts.  And, the thing he feels will surprise the group is the fact that he has never been outside the USA.





Don Cabral

Don was born an only child in Pescadero, California on November 5, 1923. He grew up on Peskey Ranch, a 617 acre ranch in Pescadero.

Don retired from real estate in 1999.  He is married to Elsie and they have 4 children, 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren..

His hobby is fishing and he boasts that he has built a number of fishing rods himself.

Don has been a member of Kiwanis for over 20 years.






Elsie Cabral

Elsie was born in San Gregorio, California on June 23, 1924.

She married Don on March 18, 1944.  They have 4 children, 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

She enjoys crafts and reading and spending time with their 2 cats.

She has been in Kiwanis since January of 2002.






Chuck Dexter

A native Californian, Chuck was born in San Francisco on April 12, 1936. His father was a Captain in the US Army, so the family moved around a bit, but he landed in Santa Clara County in 1960 and has remained here since that time.

Chuck attended the University of California, Berkeley and San Jose State University to obtain his teaching credentials.  While at Cal, he earned a varsity letter in baseball.  He pitched for the team from 1955-1958. 

He spent his 38-year career, with the Fremont Union High School District, where he spent 33 years in administration.  He retired in 1998.

He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve for 7 years.

He married his wife, Lonna, in 1973.  He has 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.  In addition to the children, his home was filled with lots of animals, including a dog, cats, birds and fish.

Chuck received the Cupertino Civic Service Award in 1988.  That year he was also honored with the Fremont Union High School District "Administrator of the Quarter" award, which he received again in 1998.  He was President of the Cupertino Kiwanis club in 1972-1973 and Kiwaniian of the Year for 1971-1972.

He has been in Kiwanis since 1968, joining to offer service to the Cupertino community.

His favorite things are listening to George Gershwin and Cole Porter, watching Giants baseball and Cal football and basketball, spending time with friends and watching "good" t.v. 

You may be surprised to learn that Chuck was once a very good trumpet player.






Jim Evans

Jim was born in Denver, Colorado on August 8, 1937.  Soon after, the family moved to the Bay Area where Jim's father worked as a physicist at Nasa-Ames.  Jim graduated from Mt. View High School and went on to attend and graduate from the University of California, Berkeley.

From 1959 - 1962 he worked for Reynolds and Co.  He left there to take a job as a sales coordinator with Hallmark, where he remained until opening his first McWhorters store in 1979.  He sold the McWhorter's chain of stores and retired in 1996.

In 1962, Jim married Judy.  They have one daughter and two grand daughters.

He was invited to join Kiwanis by former member Bill Alley
22 years ago.  He served as President in 1984-85 and was named Kiwaiian of the Year in 1987.

He is most proud of the fact that he built McWhorters from 1 store to 28.  His favorite things are rainbow trout and Cal and 49er football.





Dave Gragnola

Dave was born on a cold January morning in Chicago, 1959.  His family, which included 2 brothers and a sister, moved to Saratoga in 1968. He attended Saratoga High School, where he was voted MVP of the school's golf team in 1977.  He was also captain of the basketball team. After high school, he attended San Jose State University, where he obtained a degree in marketing, followed by an M.B.A. in 1983.  He is a member of Sigma-Chi fraternity.

He married is wife, Kristen, in 1983; they have 4 children and 2 cats.

Dave has been with Allstate since 1977 and an agent since 1984.  He has been a National Champion Award winner 13 times and Chairman's Award winner 8 times.


He enjoys golf (has gotten 6 holes-in-one), tennis, skiing and basketball.  He has been golf club champion at Saratoga Country Club 6 times.

Dave has been in Kiwanis since 1987, joining to become actively involved in community service.

He lists his favorite things as his wonderful wife and family, golfing, and playing poker with friends.  If he could, he says he would eat cookies, candy and ice cream every day!

He is most proud of his 325-yard hole-in-one on the first hole at Saratoga Country Club in 1982. 

In response to the question, "What Would You Like The Members To Know About You?" this was his answer. "I have kicked a 35 yard field goal, bowled a 248 game, had 6 holes-in-one, made 25 free throws in a row, hit a tennis serve over 90 mph and hit a pitch from Vida Blue to the wall at SBC park (batting practice of course). I excel in sports trivia, love all Chicago sports teams, am the best insurance agent in Cupertino, a Kiwaniian for life, an excellent husband and a great DAD!





Fenton Hill


Fenton was born on a walnut ranch in Cupertino, California on January 29, 1922, where he lived with his parents and 3 sisters until World War II.  He attended Cupertino Elementary and Fremont High School, where he was active in sports, actually lettering in four.  He also served as student body president.

He attended San Jose State University from 1940 to 1947, where be obtained his B.A.  He also attended Teacher's College in Valley City, Nevada and Stanford University where he obtained his M.A. degree. 

He married Winkie on July 1, 1944.  They have 2 sons, 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Fenton spent 40 years in secondary education.  In additon to teaching science and math, he coached football, baseball, basketball and tennis.  He was a high school principal for 16 years and a school board member of the Fremont Union High School District for 5 years.

In 1942 he entered the U.S. Navy where he served as a commissioned.officer, in the states and the Pacific.

His hobbies are hunting, fishing, backpacking, reading, playing poker and working on the ranch.

His many achievments include winning a number of high school sports championships and being elected to the Fremont High School Hall of Fame for Outstanding Educator.  He has been Kiwianian of the Year twice.

Fenton joined Kiwanis to meet interesting people and to broaden his horizons; he has been a member for over 45 years.

The thing he is most proud of is the fact that he can do almost anything he puts his mind to.  Something he's maybe not so proud of is getting lost while leading 4 students down from Half Dome in Yosemite.
